Using Twitter to market your dealership is easy. After all, you don’t have to compose a long article, you can just fire off a few quick characters and your followers will be thrilled to hear from you, right? Actually, no. Tweeting takes a little more thought. The point isn’t to pepper people with just anything, you want them to engage with you.

Your tweets should inspire sharing. Or start a conversation. And short as your messages may be, it can still be tough to think up new ideas likely to spark interest from your followers. Below you’ll find a dozen tweeting templates you can use. You may not find all of them equally valuable for your various target audiences, but you’ll be surprised at the versatility of these templates.

They are “Swiss cheese” style, so all you have to do is insert your dealership-specific details:

  • Add your own content where you see [BRACKETS]
  • Replace the #hashtag with the one you actually want to use. People tracking that hashtag are already interested in that topic, and the hashtag makes it easier to find your tweet.
  • Replace @TwitterHandle with the actual Twitter handle you want to use.

Simple and easy, but including the hashtag and handle give your tweets a big boost. Relevant hashtags increase visibility among your desired audience. And it’s good manners to credit your source.

These two options are like #1, with your own “something extra.” That could be a simple “+1” or an actual comment. There are two ways to do this – see #3 below.

  1. Retweet with Commentary
  2. a) Use the “retweet with comment” feature to embed the original tweet in your new message. You can then add up to 116 characters’ worth of comment.

  1. b) Manually retweet by copying the original tweet and pasting it into a new tweet. Preface it with RT @TwitterHandle and your comments.

When you start your tweet with someone else’s handle, Twitter sees your message as an @reply, so it does not show the tweet to your followers. If you do want them to be included, put a period at the very beginning of their Twitter handle.

Content that lays out a negative grabs attention. No one wants to miss out, make a mistake, be out of the loop, etc. Once you’ve captured their attention, be sure your tweets include a solution. Include a relevant hashtag, if possible.

Did you know that [STAT]? http://url.com #hashtag

Everyone loves stats – as long as they are relevant. A surprising statistic or factoid makes people want to know more.

These are like basic shared content tweets, except you can add your own endorsement. You can leave it at that or say why you’re recommending this content.

You may not realize you can embed a SlideShare presentation, document or video directly in your tweets. Your followers can check out the content without leaving Twitter.

This is a great way to survey followers or get a conversation started, so you can use it often. You can tie your question to a specific article, or pose a question about improving your dealership’s services.

Sharing photos is a way to instantly connect with followers. Add a photo to your tweet, with a caption for the text part.
